# Categories and types

Categories and types are the filters, in REST and on the stream.

## Categories

| `stocks` | US-listed equities and ETFs, divided into three types the same way Vantafin does: stock news (`category=stocks&type=news`), press releases (`category=stocks&type=press_release`) and legal notices (`category=stocks&type=legal`). |

Each article is `stocks`.

## Types

| `news` | Publisher reporting and analysis on US equities, the same bucket Vantafin calls `stockNews`: earnings coverage, analyst actions, M&A and other newsroom stories. `type=stock_news` and `stockNews` are aliases. |
| `press_release` | Official company announcements from the wire services (GlobeNewswire, Business Wire, PR Newswire, ACCESS Newswire, Newsfile, Dow Jones and others). Full text is included. Filter with `category=stocks&type=press_release`. `pressRelease` is accepted as an alias and implies `category=stocks`. |
| `legal` | Shareholder class-action and investor-alert notices from law firms. Separated from stock news and press releases, the same way Vantafin keeps them out of the default feed. |

Stocks are divided into those three types, the same split Vantafin uses. Stock news is `category=stocks&type=news` (Vantafin calls this `stockNews`). Press releases are `category=stocks&type=press_release` (`pressRelease`). Legal notices are `category=stocks&type=legal`. The homepage feed shows stock news and press releases by default and leaves legal off until you turn it on. Over the API, legal notices are included unless you filter them out with `type=news,press_release`. `type=press_release` on its own is limited to stocks.

`type=stock_news` and `type=stockNews` are aliases that return stock news only. `type=pressRelease` is an alias of `press_release`.
