An MCP Server for Real-Time Market News
Connect AI assistants to current US stock news, press releases, and legal notices with the MarketNewsAPI MCP server.

An MCP server for market news gives an AI assistant direct access to structured US equity news. It replaces manually collected links and pasted excerpts with tools that search the archive, retrieve article details, and summarize current coverage.
MarketNewsAPI provides an MCP endpoint for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and scripts. The service covers US-listed equities and ETFs, with publisher news, press releases, and legal notices.
What is an MCP server?
An MCP server is a remote tool list that an AI assistant can call. It lets the assistant request structured data through defined tools instead of relying only on pasted text or a search box.
MarketNewsAPI uses Streamable HTTP for MCP at https://mcp.marketnewsapi.com/mcp. The available tools are latest_news, search_news, get_article, market_brief, get_trending, list_sources, and list_tickers.
OAuth is how Claude and ChatGPT connect. A bearer key is how Cursor connects, as well as VS Code, Windsurf, and scripts. MCP is included with Pro and the 7-day Pro trial. It is not included on Free.
See the MCP documentation for connection details. You can also read how Claude and ChatGPT connect to real-time market news.
Why pasted headlines go stale
Pasting headlines into a prompt creates a snapshot. The assistant can summarize that snapshot, but it cannot check whether another article has been published since the text was copied.
This matters when a question depends on recent developments. A prompt may contain an older company story while missing a newer filing, press release, or legal notice. The assistant can also lose structured details such as the publication time, ticker tags, article type, and named entities.
With MCP, the assistant can call a tool when it needs current information. For example, it can request the latest stories for a ticker, filter archive results, fetch one article by ID, or build a broader market overview. The returned records retain consistent fields and links to original sources.
That approach does not turn every answer into live reporting. It gives the assistant a controlled way to retrieve the relevant market data at the time of the request. The assistant remains responsible for interpreting the results and presenting them clearly.
What can the MCP tools do?
latest_news
The latest_news tool returns the latest stock news for one or more tickers. It works well for a watchlist, a single company check, or a quick review before answering a question.
search_news
The search_news tool filters and searches across the archive. It supports full-text search and cursor paging. Search returns up to 50 articles per call, so longer result sets can be followed with the next cursor.
A search can target a ticker, category, article type, date range, source, or phrase. The underlying REST filters combine with AND, while comma-separated values within one filter are treated as OR. Full-text search covers the title, summary, and snippet. The query field accepts up to 200 characters, and quotes can be used for exact phrases.
get_article
The get_article tool retrieves one article by ID. The result includes its summary and entities. Press releases also include the full wire text, although MCP caps long press-release bodies at 20,000 characters.
Publisher stories and legal notices do not contain the publisher's full body. Their body field is null, and the reader should follow the article URL. The API includes a publisher excerpt in the snippet and a neutral AI summary when it is available.
market_brief
The market_brief tool brings the latest stories per category together with the most-covered symbols in one call. It is useful for a broader briefing that combines individual articles with an overview of active names.
get_trending
The get_trending tool ranks symbols by article count over the last hour, day, or week. It can help an assistant identify where news activity is concentrated. The corresponding REST window values are 1h, 24h, and 7d.
list_sources
The list_sources tool lists publishers covered by MarketNewsAPI and includes 30-day article counts. This is useful when an assistant needs to describe source coverage or filter a search around particular publishers.
list_tickers
The list_tickers tool lists every ticker tagged on at least one article. It includes total counts and counts for news, press releases, and legal notices. That makes it easier to confirm which symbols are represented in the archive.
Try it for 7 days. Signup starts Pro. A card is required. Real-time REST, WebSocket, and MCP, with 1,000 REST requests a day. Paid Pro removes the cap. After that it's $15/month, or Free if you stop.
What data does the MCP server cover?
MarketNewsAPI is a US stock news API from DTS Analytics LLC. Current coverage is limited to US-listed equities and ETFs. Its article types are publisher stories, press releases, and legal notices.
The archive contains more than 2.5 million articles since 2020. Every article includes an ID, title, URL, source, publisher, publication time, category, type, tickers, listings, snippet, summary, body, entities, and language. The language value is en.
Press releases contain the full wire text. Publisher stories and legal notices use their original URL for the complete article. If you show a third-party article, press release, or legal notice to an end user, keep the source and a working link.
Cryptocurrency, forex, and macro news are not available. They are planned for later on the same article shape, but an MCP request cannot retrieve those categories today.
Which plan includes MCP?
Free includes 100 REST requests per day. It provides headlines delayed by 15 minutes and access to the last 365 days of history. Free includes news, press releases, legal notices, summaries, and entities. It does not include the WebSocket or MCP.
Pro is $15 per month. The annual option is $162, which works out to $13.50 per month when billed annually. Paid Pro removes the daily REST cap and includes the full archive, real-time data, three WebSocket connections, unlimited WebSocket messages, REST, WebSocket, and MCP.
A 7-day Pro trial requires a card. Nothing is charged during the trial. The trial includes the live feed, WebSocket, MCP, the full archive, and 1,000 REST requests per day. Unless you cancel, the card is billed for Pro when the trial ends. Canceling during the trial returns the account to Free and does not create a charge.
You can start at the signup page. Review the available options at the pricing page.
How to connect an AI assistant
First, decide which assistant or client you will use. Claude and ChatGPT use OAuth. Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and scripts use an Authorization: Bearer header with an API key.
Next, point the client at https://mcp.marketnewsapi.com/mcp. After the connection is authorized, the client can discover the seven tools listed above.
Use a narrow tool call when the request has a clear subject. Ask for the latest news on a ticker before making a broad archive search. Use get_article when the assistant needs the summary, entities, or press-release text for a specific result. Use market_brief when the user wants a wider view across categories.
REST and MCP tool calls share a burst limit of 20 requests per second. If you build a workflow that sends many calls at once, pace the requests. Keep source attribution with third-party content and direct readers to the original URL.
For setup instructions and tool parameters, start with the MarketNewsAPI MCP documentation. The general API documentation begins at the docs home.
